Research in the Institute for Visual Computing

The Institute for Visual Computing currently consists of four research groups in the areas of Computer Graphics and Computer Vision. Our research activities cover a wide range of topics in computer science related to visual computing, such as computer graphics and vision, scientific visualization, geometry processing, and virtual humans. We explore the capture, processing and analysis, synthesis, and rendering of visual and geometric data, with a broad range of applications from medicine to product design and engineering, architecture, fabrication, education, entertainment, and art.
The area of visual computing has strong ties with various other disciplines beyond computer science, such as mathematics, electrical and mechanical engineering, physics, and architecture, to name a few. The visual computing faculty at D-INFK enjoys strong interactions with the Institute for Intelligent Interactive Systems, the Institute for Machine Learning, the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems, the Computer Vision Laboratory, the Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing group, the Block research group, the Autonomous Systems Laboratory, Gramazio Kohler Research, the Media Technology Center, the Game Technology Center, and the AI Center.
All of them contribute to the strength of the area at ETH Zurich. We maintain very close relationships to Disney Research Zurich directed by Markus Gross and the Microsoft Mixed Reality & AI Zurich Lab directed by Marc Pollefeys, with many joint Ph.D. projects and collaborations. The institute further maintains international collaborations with a large number of top academic research institutions worldwide.
